The following was a clip taken from a home visit today.
It features 2 French Bulldogs. One of them is very needy. He constantly demands affection, he can get possessive of his owner when the other dog is around and snap at the other French Bulldog. He will push the other dog out the way if he is getting a fuss and he isn't.
It turns out that he is also slightly nervous.
The reason for all of the above is because he is rewarded for needy behaviour constantly. He is also spoilt but has no discipline or rules.
Most the dogs I meet that are neurotic is because of the above reasons mentioned. They get to much affection at the wrong times, they are spoilt and they have no clear rules. This Creates instability in the dog and can lead to the dog becoming nervous.
Now the good thing is, it's actually quiet easy to stop these behaviours. By teaching rules to affection, by not rewarding neediness and by being consistent the dogs behaviour will quickly change and will also grow in Confidence.
When it comes to working with dogs, it's not about stopping the affection, it's not about getting the owners to stop spoiling the dog, I mean let's face it, we all want to spoil our dogs and we all want to fuss them. It's about setting rules and teaching them how to behave when they get affection and also finding that healthy balance.
Spoiling a dog is fine if you have the healthy balance. The more the dog listens, the more affection they get, the more the dog listens, the more trust you put in them, which in turn leads to a much, healthier and better life.
