there is a hell of a lot of ignorance and controversy surrounding E collars, the main focus atm is for these tools to be banned. Both the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust are at the front line of this campaign.
However they’re not being totally honest with us, they’re manipulating the public into believing these tools are barbaric, that they cause dogs to shut down and that are painful.
All of the above can be true, so they’re not totally dishonest in what they’re saying, they’re clever though, as that’s what these collars do when you misuse them. In the right hands these collars are a training aid that are not designed to do what Dogs Trust and The Kennel Club are saying.
They can be used to save the lives of dogs, they can be used to give total off lead freedom and they can be used without making dogs fearful or shutting down.
The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust are also not telling you that like all Technology, there is good and bad versions of these collars, same as any other collar and same as food we use in training, all of which are misused far more frequently which causes just as much harm to a dog. Cheap e collars ones from China should not be sold period ! But the ones that most decent professionals use, they’re so fine tuned and you can find levels that a dog is comfortable with.
Flat buckle collars, head collars, harnesses, choke chains, slip collars all can be used to create pain to a dog, when used incorrectly, all have been used this way many times more then e collars. Food is the biggest training aid abused out of them all, you will find more dogs that are fat (that is abuse unless there is a medical reason) then you will being abused at the hands of someone misusing a e collar, yet we turn a blind eye to this. The KC and Dogs Trust don’t care about that, they only care about things that will get them in the press and on tv.
Banning tools is not the answer, organisations that make the money they do, have the resources to really make a difference and focus on the real problem at hand:
Over Breeding
Obesity
Those actually abusing dogs
Fixing the breed standard for the German Shepherd (kennel club)
Training their staff to actually be able to train dogs and be able to properly assess them (dogs trust)
Proper education on all tools so the public can make a proper informed decision on the tools they may use for their dogs.
They have the power to make a difference, instead they pay their directors more money then most people make in a life time and start campaigns that is nothing more then a publicity stunt to make themselves look good.
Wether they ban e collars or not, they have a duty to be honest about them.
